Winding direction for automatic label applicators
The wrong winding direction stops the bottling line. The eight standard options, core size, max diameter and what to tell us in the brief.

When labels go on an automatic applicator, winding direction isn't a preference, it's a machine spec. A wrongly wound roll can't be flipped by hand without rewinding the whole run. It's one of the few mistakes that genuinely stops a line, so it's worth a minute of attention at order time.
The eight standard options
The industry standard numbers positions 1 to 8. Options 1-4 mean labels face out of the roll, 5-8 face in. Within each group the orientation differs: head first, foot first, left edge first or right edge first.
- Position 1: face out, label head unwinds first.
- Position 3: face out, foot unwinds first.
- Positions 2 and 4: face out, left or right edge first - common on wrap-around labels.
- Positions 5-8: same orientations, but with the face wound inwards.
What else matters besides direction
- Core diameter: usually 40 mm or 76 mm. Your applicator typically accepts only one.
- Maximum roll outer diameter (OD): limited by machine space. Exceed it and the roll won't fit.
- Labels per roll: if you need a fixed count per roll for shift planning, say so.
- Gap between labels: some sensors need at least 3 mm to detect reliably.
- Sensor type: on clear materials an ultrasonic sensor is more reliable than an optical one.
What to send us in the brief
Ideal: applicator brand and model plus the winding position from the manual. If the manual isn't at hand, a photo of an old roll mounted on the machine settles it in two minutes. If labels are applied by hand, we wind standard: face out, head first.

Frequently asked
I ordered the wrong direction. Can it be fixed?
Yes, we rewind the rolls, but it adds production time. It's simpler to confirm the direction in the brief before the run.
Can I get the same run on different core sizes?
Yes, we can split the run across rolls with different cores if you run several lines. Mention the split in the order.
