FDA food-contact certified toner for food labels: what it actually means

When you say "my label has to be food safe", many producers assume FSC paper is enough. The reality is more nuanced: the ink or toner used to print the label matters as much, because in thin packaging or jars with oily products, there's a risk of chemical components migrating through the material. What does "FDA food contact" mean?

FDA food contact certification (21 CFR, Code of Federal Regulations) attests that our toner meets migration thresholds for chemical components in materials in food contact. In the EU, this aligns with Regulation 1935/2004 (general framework for food-contact materials) and 10/2011 (plastics).

When is it relevant for you?

• Honey, jam and sauce jars (indirect contact, minimal through glass thickness).

Difference vs flexo / offset

Many flexo and offset houses use UV inks which, without complete curing, leave photoinitiator residues with migration risk (e.g. ITX, benzophenone). For sensitive products, that means either an extra aluminium barrier or changing inks. With us, LED curing is instant and complete, and the toner is factory-certified.
