    Freezer-resistant labels: what survives -25 °C

    Freezer, fridge or condensation? The adhesive decides, not the face stock. Practical guide on application temperature, humidity and common mistakes.

    Most labels that fall off in a freezer don't fail because of the face stock, but because of the adhesive and the moment of application. A standard permanent adhesive applies well at +10 °C and then holds down to -20 °C, but if you stick it onto packaging that just came out of the freezer, it never builds bond and peels within 24 hours.

    Fridge vs freezer: two different specs

    • Fridge (+2 to +8 °C): the real problem is condensation, not cold. The stock must be film (white PP or PP), not paper, otherwise it swells and discolours.
    • Freezer (-18 to -25 °C): the cold is constant, so the adhesive must be deep-freeze rated and applied at room temperature.
    • Repeated freeze-thaw cycles: the harshest case. Film plus deep-freeze adhesive, no exceptions.
    • Products that get wet on thawing (fish, vegetables): lamination over the print, otherwise text rubs off in handling.

    Application temperature: the detail that breaks everything

    Every adhesive has two temperatures: minimum application temperature and service range. They are different. A typical deep-freeze adhesive applies above -5 °C and holds to -40 °C. If your line labels already-frozen products, tell us upfront, because that requires an adhesive rated for cold, damp surfaces, not a standard permanent.

    What to send in the brief

    • Packaging temperature at the moment of application, not just storage temperature.
    • Packaging material: PE, PP, varnished board, glass, metallised film. Low-energy surfaces need a different adhesive.
    • Whether the label touches food directly or only secondary packaging.
    • Whether the pack has condensation or frost at application.

    Mistakes we see often

    • Semi-gloss paper on chilled products: looks fine for a day, then curls at the edges.
    • Labels applied over grease or water residue: no adhesive compensates for a dirty surface.
    • Unlaminated print on products handled while wet.
    • Application with insufficient pressure: adhesives need firm contact for initial tack.

    • Does paper survive in a freezer?

      In a dry freezer with the right adhesive, yes. Trouble starts at thawing, when moisture enters the fibre. For anything taken in and out, we go with film.

    • Can the label be applied directly to frozen product?

      Only with an adhesive rated for cold, damp surfaces, and the bond stays weaker than room-temperature application. If you can label before freezing, that's the safe route.
