PP vs PE vs paper: the complete label material guide

Paper or plastic is the most frequent question in the briefs we receive. The right answer depends on four variables: use context, compliance (food, cosmetics, CLP), budget and visual ambition. Below we compare the three main families: PP, PE and paper.

PP - biaxially oriented polypropylene

A rigid film with excellent resistance to water, oil and friction. Ideal for cosmetics, wash-resistant food, returnable bottles. Available in white, clear, silver and gold.

PE - flexible polyethylene

A soft film used on squeezable bottles (sauces, gels, dispensers) because it moulds onto curved shapes without wrinkling. PE is not part of our production: the equivalent we run is conformable white PP with lamination.

Paper - natural, premium or eco

The most versatile family. Glossy whites for mass-market products, kraft for artisan, textured for premium wine. All can be laminated for durability.

Quick decision table

• Wine or spirits bottle: textured paper or clear PP.
• Cream, serum, perfume: white or clear PP + matte lamination.
• Detergent or gel bottles: white PP with gloss lamination (we do not run PE).
• Honey, jam, spice jars: kraft paper or glossy white paper.
• Pharma labels with serialisation: FSC semi-gloss paper + permanent adhesive.
• Cold chain (-25 C): PP with approved freezer adhesive.
